Our Activities
Bringing hope and Changing lives
Programme
We organise and schedule free literacy classes three times in a week in all HEAI centers while Vocational Skill acquisition holds two times a week.
FREE LITERACY & EMPOWERMENT FOR OUT-OF-SCHOOL YOUTHS.
Through the Union of adult education, literacy and continuing education managers, adult education is taught in the market place, local government areas, places of worship, etc. The center managers meet quarterly to:
Relate effectively with other stakeholders in the literacy programmes.
Ensure regular capacity building, workshops and seminars for facilitators and learners.
Integrate and harmonise the activities of the centers based on needs.
Have a strong body as a grassroot approach for educating the learners.
In these centers, the curriculum of the National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult non-formal Education (NMEC) is used in the centers. Other need based literature texts are also used. At the end of the year, the learners attend an annual competition organised by the state agency of NMEC. Here, successful learners win priizes ranging from cash to household electrical appliances.
In addition, a certificate of basic literacy or post – literacy according to learner’s qualification is presented to them. Subsequently, graduands of post-literacy are enrolled in NAPTEB (National Technical Education Board), whilst some with greater skills enroll for the General Certificate of Education (GCE), which is the basic requirement for entering into tertiary institutions. However, scholarship is awarded to indigent learners to enable them further their education.
Annual Carnivals
It is a one stop shop for all participants of Ufreedom. Here, members unwind and plan for the next year. This is a fun filled activity embedded in culture and empowerment programme. This carnival is geared towards:
Turning all the anti-social, anti-cultural, immoral behavious and youth restiveness into a positive and rewarding behaviour.
Activities lined up for the annual carnival provide job for fashion designers, caterers, make up artists, event managers, etc.
Participants visit eco tourist centers in their environment. This creates jobs and also enhances development and maintenance of eco-sustainable tour
Free Literacy & Empowerment for Pregnant Teens
From chart one, large population of out-of-school children (about 70%) is alarming. Most girls among them are involved in child prostitution which in many cases result to pregnancy and other health complications. Ufreedom seek out these girls through announcements in places of worship, in the villages by the town criers and sometimes through radio.
At the literacy centers they are taught basic literacy and vocational skills and health tips to see them through pregnancy. When the children are born, the babies are catered for 3 years while the mothers are given a revolving loan to start a trade learnt at the vocational center. Interestingly, some of these teens find life partners or husbands at these literacy centers.
Free Literacy & Empowerment for Widows
In Africa, widowhood is a dread. Widows mourn not for the loss of their dead husbands but for the treatment meted to them at the loss of a husband. Ufreedom therefore helps to ameliorate these problems by providing literacy classes, vocational skills and revolving loans for them. They access this loan interest free. Legal services by members are also provided for them free of charge in case they have any litigation by their relations in terms of their husband’s assets.
Free wellness of the Elderly
The African culture is that part of ‘being your brother keeper.’ Old people’s home is an anthema and strongly frowned at. So whatever need an elderly requires must be conveyed to her home. Wellness of the elderly is simply connecting to our parents and showing a special relationship and bonding. Facilitators and learners are selected to visit the elderly whenever the need arises. on our visit to their homes, we see to their health needs. The Nurses and Doctors among us give them immediate medical attention, and often referrals are made. For their material needs, we provide food items, toiletries, disinfectants and other needs.
For the homeless and destitute, we refer them to few old people’s homes run by the religious and government. For their social and physical needs, we present cakes at their birthdays, gift items, and also take them out to picnics. We encourage them to play games (ebimas and ebigram) and take a walk round their homes.
Integration of African Cultures, Traditions, Values & Ethics
Children, youths and adults of African origin are taught the cultures, traditions, values, ethics, circular job mobility and attitudinal orientation. Ufreedom organises cultural dances where participants adorn themselves in cultural and traditional costumes and present dances at Afro – American, Afro-European, Afro-Asian picnics, carnivals, festivals and other celebrations that hold in the USA, United Kingdom and China.
During the summer holidays, the children are taught in their mother tongue, while they also practice the preparation and presentation of their traditional dishes. documentaries and films are also shown to them to further consolidate their knowledge. At an annual fair, they present an array of these dishes to a group of judges who select the winners and runnerups. All participants however, go home with prizes.
